The curved hurricane shape does real work in a long cocktail: volume low down where the ice sits, a narrower waist for the hand, and a wide head for the garnish.
At 42cl it suits long, iced rum drinks such as the Rum Runner and the Bahama Mama, with room for crushed ice and fruit. The Field Manual's Hurricane is a big pour, so for that one a larger glass gives the ice more room.
