Liqueurs

Jägermeister

Jägermeister is a German bittersweet herbal liqueur at 35% ABV, so 25ml is about 0.9 UK units. Difford’s Guide says it is made from 56 varieties of herbs, fruits and spices, macerated in spirit for up to six weeks and then matured in oak before blending. Our Death Flip takes 15ml with blanco tequila, yellow Chartreuse and a whole egg. The 35% comes from a UK wholesaler’s listing and Difford’s Guide, which agree. The maker’s own site returned no readable text when we read it on 1 November 2026.

Tasting Notes

Difford’s Guide calls it bitter-sweet.

Two sources give 35%, and the maker’s site gave none

The maker’s site returned only its navigation when we read it, so we took the strength elsewhere. The LWC listing gives 35% ABV, a 70cl bottle, Germany as the country of origin and the product type non-cream liqueur. Difford’s Guide also gives 35% alc./vol., and calls Jägermeister a bitter-sweet liqueur. Neither prints a sugar figure, so we state none.

Difford’s Guide gives the method and the name

Difford’s Guide says the liqueur uses 56 varieties of herbs, fruits and spices, macerated in spirit for up to six weeks and then matured in oak before blending. It says the company was established in 1878 but did not produce this liqueur until 1935, and that the name means master of the hunt. The deer-and-cross logo, it adds, recalls a vision in the life of St Hubert, patron saint of hunters.

In the Death Flip it is the smallest measure

The Death Flip takes 15ml of Jägermeister with 30ml of blanco tequila, 15ml of yellow Chartreuse, a dash of syrup and a whole egg. The 15ml is about 0.5 UK units. The LWC listing says to serve it ice cold, and it is a bottle to measure, not to free-pour.

Using it

Using Jägermeister

Usage

Measure 15ml with 30ml of blanco tequila, 15ml of yellow Chartreuse, a dash of simple syrup and a whole egg for a Death Flip, shaken. On its own it is served ice cold.

Pro Tip

Measure it in a jigger. In a short, egg-rich drink such as the Death Flip, 15ml is enough, and a heavy hand covers the Chartreuse.

Top Tips

  • Measure it. At 35% it carries as much alcohol per ml as a light spirit.
  • Serve it ice cold, as the wholesaler’s listing advises.
  • Check the bottle for the contains line. We found none on the listing we read.

Possible Substitutions

  • Fernet Branca: Italian and 39% ABV on our page; adds menthol in small measures, so the drink changes
  • Averna: Sicilian amaro at 29% ABV on our page; lighter in strength, so the drink changes

Production Method

Per Difford’s Guide: 56 varieties of herbs, fruits and spices macerated in spirit for up to six weeks, then matured in oak before blending.

Common Questions

What is Jägermeister?

A German bittersweet herbal liqueur. Difford’s Guide says it is made from 56 varieties of herbs, fruits and spices, macerated in spirit for up to six weeks and matured in oak before blending.

How strong is Jägermeister?

35% ABV on a UK wholesaler’s listing and on Difford’s Guide, so 25ml is about 0.9 UK units (35 x 25 / 1,000 = 0.88). We took the figure from those two because the maker’s site returned no readable text. UK units are ABV times millilitres divided by 1,000; the Chief Medical Officers’ guideline is no more than 14 units a week, spread over three or more days.

Is Jägermeister a liqueur?

Yes, on both sources we read: the LWC listing gives non-cream liqueur and Difford’s Guide calls it a bitter-sweet liqueur. At 35% it is well above the 15% minimum for the liqueur category.

Does Jägermeister contain allergens?

None are declared on the wholesaler’s listing we read, and the maker’s page returned no text. Check the contains line on your bottle.

Where is Jägermeister made?

Germany is the country of origin on the LWC listing and on Difford’s Guide. Neither names a town, so we name none.

How long does Jägermeister keep once opened?

We found no maker’s figure. In our experience a strong herbal liqueur keeps for years once opened if the cap goes back on and the bottle stays out of the light, and only the aroma fades.

What is Jägermeister used for in a cocktail?

It adds bitter spice in a small measure. The Death Flip uses 15ml beside blanco tequila and yellow Chartreuse.

What can I use instead of Jägermeister?

Another herbal liqueur, with a change to the drink. Fernet-Branca is stronger at 39% on our page and adds menthol, and Averna is a Sicilian amaro at 29%.
