Foursquare is the Seale family’s distillery in St Philip, Barbados
Foursquare stands in the parish of St Philip, Barbados, in a sugar factory that stopped working in the late 1980s. The Seale family bought the site in 1995 and began distilling there in 1996. Richard Seale runs the distillery.

Its rum is sold under the family’s own names, Doorly’s and R.L. Seale’s among them, and under the Foursquare name for the limited releases.
The Seales blended rum for some seventy years before they distilled it
Skurnik, the distillery’s American importer, says R.L. Seale & Co. was formed in 1926 by Reginald Leon Seale as a merchant blender and bottler of rum in Barbados. Punch adds that the family bought rum from Barbados distilleries, blending and selling it under the R.L. Seale name.
Sir David Seale, Richard’s father, bought the derelict Foursquare factory in 1995. Stills were built for it, with parts made in Scotland, Italy and Barbados, and the first spirit ran in 1996. Skurnik calls Richard Seale the fourth generation of the family, where Punch counts him the fifth.
Barbados has no rum GI in force, and Foursquare has argued for one
A geographical indication would fix in law what may be sold as Barbados rum. None is in force. In 2020 Foursquare, Mount Gay and St Nicholas Abbey put forward rules that would have required the rum to be aged on the island, with no added sugar, among other conditions.
The West Indies Rum Distillery, owned by Maison Ferrand and the maker of Plantation rum, opposed the draft and asked to be allowed to mature Barbados rum outside the island. Drinks International reported both sides in 2020. In November 2025 Barbados Today reported that no geographical indication had yet been registered on the island.
Foursquare blends pot and column rum made under one roof
Foursquare ferments molasses, most of it imported, much from Guyana, and distils the wash on two kinds of still. Almost everything it bottles is a blend of the two spirits.
The pot still gives weight and the column gives lightness
The pot still is copper, topped by a short column and two retorts, chambers the vapour passes through on its way to the condenser. It gives a heavy, oily spirit. The column still was built in Italy with three columns and can run as two, under vacuum. It gives a lighter spirit at a higher strength.
Nothing is added after the cask
The rum goes into cask at between 65% and 68% ABV, mostly in barrels that held American whiskey. Some is aged or finished in casks that held sherry, port, madeira or zinfandel. Heat speeds the work of the wood, so ten years in Barbados is not ten years in Scotland.
Foursquare adds no sugar, colouring or flavouring. What sweetness the rum has comes from the oak. Skurnik calls Richard Seale an outspoken advocate for truth and transparency.
Single blended rum means pot and column rum from one distillery
Foursquare’s rum fits the term single blended rum, which The Fat Rum Pirate records from the classification Luca Gargano of the Italian bottler Velier drew up with Richard Seale: a blend of only pot still and traditional column still rum from one distillery.
Foursquare rum is dry because nothing sweetens it
With nothing added, a Foursquare rum is dry. The flavour comes from the spirit and the cask: vanilla, toffee, dried fruit and baking spice, with the pot still giving weight and the column keeping it clean. A drinker used to sweetened rum may find it austere at first. Cask-strength bottlings take a few drops of water well.
The range runs in two tiers: core blends and the Exceptional Cask Selection
The range runs in two tiers. The core blends, under the Doorly’s and R.L. Seale’s names, are made in volume. The Exceptional Cask Selection is a run of strictly limited bottlings, each with its own name.

Drink the limited releases neat and mix the core blends
Keep the Exceptional Cask Selection for a glass on its own, with a few drops of water if it is at cask strength.
A core Barbados blend suits drinks that call for aged rum, such as the Rum Punch and the Rum Sour. A white or lightly aged rum suits a Daiquiri.
The Corn n’ Oil is Barbados’s own drink: dark rum over falernum, with bitters and lime. The Field Manual version calls for blackstrap rum.

The 2020 dispute over a Barbados rum GI was reported by Drinks International: the West Indies Rum Distillery’s objection and a reply from a supporter of the proposal. Barbados Today reported in November 2025 that no GI had been registered.
