Mount Gay’s history starts with a deed of 1703
The estate’s oldest surviving deed, a deed of sale dated 20 February 1703, records rum-making equipment on the land, then called Mount Gilboa. Mount Gay describes itself as the oldest running rum distillery on the strength of that document.
John Sober bought the estate in 1747 and later engaged Sir John Gay Alleyne, a Barbadian member of parliament, to help run it. When Gay Alleyne died in 1801, the Sobers renamed it Mount Gay in his honour.
Mount Gay says its XO was the first XO (Extra Old) in the rum category, created by then Master Blender Jerry Edwards.
Aubrey Ward bought the estate in 1918, and his signature stayed on the label until after 2000.
Rémy Cointreau became majority owner in 1989, after the death of Ward’s son. Mount Gay states that Rémy Cointreau took full control in 2014; Rémy Cointreau’s own page says Mount Gay became part of the group that year. In 2015 Mount Gay acquired 324 acres of the historic Mount Gay and Oxford estates. Trudiann Branker became master blender in 2019, and Mount Gay says she is the first woman to hold the post at Mount Gay and in Barbados.
Mount Gay backed a Barbados rum GI that has not come into force
Barbados has no geographical indication for its rum in force. In 2020 Mount Gay, Foursquare and St Nicholas Abbey proposed one that would have required ageing on the island and barred added sugar. The West Indies Rum Distillery, maker of Plantation rum, opposed it, as Drinks International reported. No GI had been registered by November 2025.
Mount Gay’s core range blends pot still rum with column still rum
The water comes from the estate’s own coral-filtered well
Barbados is built largely of coral limestone, which filters rainwater on its way down to the water table. Mount Gay draws its water from a private artesian well on the estate, which it says was first dug in 1703.
The molasses comes from Barbados and elsewhere in the Caribbean only. Mount Gay ferments it with its own, proprietary strain of yeast.
Double retort pot stills give the weight
Mount Gay describes its pot stills as double retort copper pots. A retort is a chamber the vapour passes through between the still and the condenser, and it gives a heavier, more aromatic spirit. The copper column still gives a lighter one.
Most bottlings blend the two. Mount Gay’s limited Master Blender Collection, Single Estate Series and Exceptionally Aged Collection have released single pot-still, column-still and Coffey-still rums.
Most of the rum ages in ex-whiskey, bourbon and cognac casks
By Mount Gay’s account, most of its rum ages in casks that held American whiskey or bourbon, and some in cognac casks. Silver includes unaged column rum, blended with pot still rum aged two years in American whiskey casks. Heat speeds the exchange with the wood, so a Barbados rum takes on oak faster than a spirit aged in a cool cellar.
Black Barrel spends a final six months in heavily charred ex-bourbon casks, which is where its name comes from.
Mount Gay describes its signature notes as vanilla, almond, ripe banana and dark chocolate
For Eclipse, Mount Gay says this is complemented by summer fruit notes with a light to medium body.
In Mount Gay’s Black Barrel tasting video, its master blender says Black Barrel is matured for 3 to 7 years in American whiskey casks, finished for six months in heavily charred ex-bourbon casks. Mount Gay says this gives the rum notes of orange zest, black pepper, toasted vanilla and toffee, with a medium body and a long finish.
Mount Gay XO, having matured between 5 and 17 years in ex-American whiskey, bourbon and cognac casks, is round and complex by Mount Gay’s account, delivering flavours of salted caramel, baked fig, clove and dark chocolate; it delivers a smooth and long finish.
By Mount Gay’s account, Eclipse is the most famous product of a range that reaches 25 years
The core range runs Silver, Eclipse, Black Barrel and XO, with Bajan Spiced being the newest addition. Higher-strength versions of Eclipse and Black Barrel sit beside them, and limited releases, age-stated 15- and 25-year-old blends, part of the Exceptionally Aged Collection, sit above XO.
Mount Gay also has what it calls an ultra-premium series: a terroir-focused and fully vertically integrated production, named the Single Estate Series. Mount Gay describes it as ‘the first single estate rum, from the world’s oldest rum estate’. By Mount Gay’s account, each release uses sugar cane 100% grown on their estate in Barbados, exclusively using their own molasses, and 100% distilled on their double pot still (except for the unaged Single Estate Series 03, distilled on their Coffey still).

The 1703 name has been used for the house’s oldest regular blends, as 1703 Old Cask Selection and 1703 Master Select. Limited releases appear in the Master Blender Collection and the Single Estate Series.
Mix Eclipse and Black Barrel, and sip the older blends
Silver or Eclipse suits a Daiquiri. Eclipse or Black Barrel suits drinks that call for aged rum, such as the Rum Punch and the Rum Sour.
The Corn n’ Oil is Barbados’s own drink: dark rum over falernum, with bitters and lime. The Field Manual version calls for blackstrap rum.
Keep XO and the age-stated blends for a glass on their own, poured over a large ice cube, or with a drop of water if the alcohol seems hot.
